Halitosis Do you know what it is? Avoid it at all costs!

bad breath halitosis

Halitosis is the unpleasant odor that is expelled from the mouth chronically, that is, it does not disappear with a good brushing or a mouthwash but it lasts over time and not only after eating a food with a strong taste or smell.

Normally this problem is very associated with lack of hygiene but there are many possible reasons why it may occur.
The bacteria that inhabit our mouth and that feed on food waste between our teeth are responsible for producing the bad smell, therefore the more proliferation of bacteria, the more foul our breath will be.

There are multiple reasons why you can increase the number of bacteria that cause bad breath as well as poor brushing.
It is possible that some of the foods that we eat regularly or some habits are contributing directly or indirectly in this regard.

For example, smoking is a habit that causes a decrease in the production of saliva, which, in turn, increases the production of microorganisms in the oral cavity.

What can mean bad breath

There are certain pathologies that are associated with the appearance of bad breath. Some of them related to the mouth, for example gingivitis, periodontitis, access, caries, but other non-oral diseases can also cause bad breath. It is known that some gastrointestinal disorders or infections of the throat or respiratory tract, as well as kidney problems, or diabetes are able to alter the breath of those who suffer from them.

If you notice that lately you suffer from bad breath in a recurrent and / or progressive way, it is advisable that you pay attention to a more rigorous cleaning of teeth, tongue and gums in order to rule out that it is an inadequate hygiene problem.

Then, if the problem persists, you can first consult your dentist, who can help you determine the cause of the problem and if there is an oral problem give you the instructions to address your case. In case that bad breath is due to other pathologies your dentist can contact you with the corresponding specialist.

Is halitosis incurable?

The most important thing is to understand that halitosis has a solution if it is given the right treatment. If you have time battling with this problem, maybe you have not given it the right approach. It is possible that you are treating the issue from the wrong perspective in the sense that you are trying solutions that only mask the problem but do not solve it in the bud.

For example, if you are using a mouthwash that freshens your breath or conceals the smell for a short period of time but in reality your problem of bad breath is due to a problem of gastric reflux, you will not see good results until you follow the appropriate treatment indicated by a gastroenterologist.

In the same way it may be happening if it is some other pathology that is causing halitosis.
You should not feel ashamed to suffer halitosis, just focus on finding the cause that is causing this symptom and together with the right specialist, work to recover from this condition and regain your confidence.
